$ i. J. , 1 WILLAMETTE FARMER. . M . f i. Kit iSI Jhedlander'a Opinion on the Wheat Trade. Mr. Frledlander has Issued his annual olr ealar giving his vIovtb of tbe whoat trado and probablo surplus, together with an analysis of tbe mistakes of the last harvest year. After rovlowltiK tho fluctuations which havo occurred In tlio grain marts of the world tltirlnir the pant your, Mr. Frlodlan dor rornarks of tlio KdrIIhIi market: It was not until war was declared, and tho troops nctually In motion, (hat tho trado awoke to the realities of thoir poHlllon and found thomholven with hhort Htonks, baro markots abroad, and orio of tho ureal sotirO' cs of supply cut oil. At otino an active de mand set In for all descrlnttons of bread ninth, and prices roso rapidly until 70s per quarter wai roiicliod for lioino-Krown wheat the hlKhest point touobod since 18(JU. Fnin this point It Kradunlly recodod ai It bocamo more ovldenttbat tuo war would bo local Jzod, and with lino woather and a brilliant crop prospect, tho trade now shows groat in dliroronco about buying, and tho market Is going along from hand to mouth. It Is now, Ewovcr, llablo to sudden revulsions from many oxtrauoous causes, and it would not be at alia matter of surprise to see a Jump of from Cs to 10a a quarter at any tltno boforo the gathering of the now harvest, Certain ly a fortnight of soon weather as prevailed In Eogland In Angntt, 1876, would bring such a change about very easily, and even without any inch desperate causes it Is hard to see how some advanoe can be avoided be fore the new grain becomes available. Of tbe grave errors which were made ear My last season In estimating tbe probable yield, the oiroular stya: Tbe impression was quite general that a surplus of 1,000,000 tone would be reaobed; tkatjwe would export 800.000 was thought probable by very conservative peoplo, while hardly any one Imagined that we could fall abort of 700,000 tons. We shipped 007(000 and here the great mistake of the season commenced. The prloe of wheat was dis turbed by tbls supposed surplus, and for weeks and weeks buyors could not mako up their minds to pay the prloes now known to have boon fairly domandod by growers On the other hand, tho price of ships and freights was disarranged mostsorlously, tbe opinion prevailing that wo wore short of tonnago. whon in reality wo woro abundant ly supplied, lletween tho two mistakes the trado Joit a magnificent opportunity, and, unfortunately, It passod without profit to any ono. During tho year 313 voisola. en tirely or In part whoat-Iaden, left Hatt Fran cisco. Of tlir-so 301, carrying 10,-11,-101 ecu UIm, went to ICuropo. ProHpro'H of tho prosont crop aro sum mod tip kh follows: woarnuow unionog upon h now crop, and It tu i.v not Its out of oritur, while giving our best jutltftiiout lis to its amount and quality, to take n glance ut tho prohibit) futuriMiftlio mirkot. Tho planting season was a most iiutironltlous one. very few dis tricts of thn Mutto having been favored with sulllalont moisture to enable thn farmers to get their crops properly In the uround, wlillo In ninny and those somo of the most oxtonHlvo not enough rain fell nil through tbo wlntor to admit of plowing at all, Kviin In tlio moit favored HtrIoU, tho amount that fell was barily sulllnlont to mako tho crop, and in these only the bostoultlvatod Aolds gve a full ylsld, In many parts volunteer and winter sown grain was an en tiro failure, and all through tho southern part of the Stato tho fields wero bare, except In a few spots where Irrigation was practic ed. A sort of mildew, too. overtook tbe erop during the soring, attacking the best of the grain, and although the dsinage proved less than was at one time feared, there is no doubt that U shortened the crop In a moasure. The estimates of yield are, of course, vory muoli varied, some planing our surplus for export as high as .100,000 to 400,000 tons of 3,000 lbs. This Is, however, almost univer sally considered tno'hlgh, but many believe wo will have liaO.OOO to '300,000 tons. We, ourselves, look on the first of those as ex treme, and are not dlsposod to put it even at 1100,000 tons. Tbe quality of I ho grain prom ises to bo fully up to theaversKe, and as tbe bullcnf the crop will be grown In the north ern part of thoHlate. the proportion of t Hot ly white whoat will bo larger than usual. Tho Oregon wheat crop of lB7il 77 was on the wbolo not tin to the average In yield nor In the quality of the gralnt but the one now ripening will undoubtedly be the largest ver harvested In tha t Ntale, and from what we oan learn there Is no matou to doubt that It will boa superior ono In every respeut. It bulllucultto ssy what tbosutplus for export will be, but we shall not bn surprised if it reaches 100,000 to '.900,000 tons. Tempenujoe Meeting. Pursuant to nptloe a number of citizens of Polk county mft at the shed on the cam p ground near Dallas July 14, to have a plonlo dinner and to orgauiro an open temperance society. Wo copy tho following fromttho San Fran cisco Commercial Herald, July 12th: There continues tonxtsta wonderful detrreo of apathy respecting tho chartering of ships for grain carrlago lo tho United Kingdom. Freights rulo low, say from 40s to 42 Od.tho former rate for largo carriers lo a direct port, IT, K , tho lattor rate to Cork or Falmouth, U. IC. Disengaged tonnago continues to ac cumulate with very little outsldo business offering. There Is, however, an Inquiry from Oregou for an iron ship, and for this OSsis asked and 65s offered. Having entered upon a new harvest year, we have dispatched tbe ahlp Oracle to Cork with a full cargo of wheat, being tbe plonoer vessel of the fleet of 1877-6. The receipts of whoat and barley ol tbe new nrop continue to reach us very sparingly, farmers holding back their crops In a surprising manner. We are, however Informed that purchases of wheat In Stockton havo recently been made to some extent for export at very full figures, probably bought by some exporter that has a ship chartered whose lay days are about to expire. Tbe market for Feed stuff Is quite active and at vonr remunerative prloes. Or egon Is now sending to us large supplies of wool, salmon, flour, whoat, oats, fruit, and other produce, receiving therefor good prices. Wiiicat. The receipts of new crop aro as yet of trifling moment, farmers continuing to wlthold their grain from market. Home purchases are, however, reported at Stockton snd at full (Inures but tho details aro with held.
